Have you ever watched the television series The Smurfs? An interesting fact, the acronym SMSF is actually pronounced the same way as “smurf”!
Why should you set up a SMSF?

Once there was a village filled with SMSFs. There was Papa SMSF (The regulator of SMSFs) and many CMSFs (Commercially managed super funds). All the CMSFs looked the same but each had their own unique trait and investment styles. Every ‘unique’ CMSF would stick to their own unique trait and investment style, never breaking character. There was only one unique SMSF among the many CMFS, she was called SMFS-ette. SMSF-ette did not have a unique trait but possessed the ability to exhibit all of the other CMFS traits and use whatever investment style she wanted.
One day the evil Globalmelt (Global meltdown or better known as the global financial crisis) came to the land of the SMSFs and attacked the village. A huge battle raged, the CMSF with aggressive traits and strategies lead the charge against Globalmelt, ultimately losing to the sheer size and power of Globalmelt. One by one the CMFS who had unique traits not suited to this new threat were captured by Globalmelt, destroying the hopes of the people who invested in their funds. Their dreams of a good retirement gone with every captured CMFS. Only a few smart or lucky CMSFs who ran for cover into the shelters of risk free investments or were already investing in those financial instruments survived.
The quick thinking SMSF-ette, who understood the size of the threat, quickly changed from an aggressive investment strategy (that delivered great returns during the boom times) to seek shelter in the safety of risk free investments. She could only do this because she had the ability to control her own traits and actions.
When Globalmelt retreated from the village, SMSF-ette and the remaining CMSFs lives were forever altered by what occurred. However, from the destruction there was still hope, a stronger more determine Papa SMSF flexed his regulatory muscle to make sure that the remain CMSFs had proper procedures to follow in case Globalmelt ever came back. SMSF-ette on the other hand was commended by Papa SMSF for her ability to think on her feet to safeguard her own well being and interests.
